Emergency Resilience

The Emergency Resilience Group is a part of your Cape Coast Community Group

This group of local volunteers is tasked with raising awareness in our community so we are resilient and prepared for any natural disaster

Our mission is to ensure measures are in place to help our community become well equipped to look after each other before, during, and after an emergency.

Haumoana and Te Awanga began as settlements of temporary or holiday baches that developed over a long period along the shingle crests of the coastal strip. Over the years larger dwellings were built, and some commuters chose these coastal settlements in preference to the main centres.

The surrounding area was traditionally been used for sheep and cattle grazing and horticulture. However, lifestyle blocks and grape growing and horticulture have become prominent in recent times.

The Cape Coast is located along the Hawke’s Bay coastline on the east coast of the North Island. The geographical area for the Emergency Resilience Plan includes Haumoana, Te Awanga, Clifton, Tuki Tuki, and the surrounding rural area. The Tukituki River provides the natural boundary between the Cape Coast and East Clive.

The main attraction for most living in the area is the beautiful coastline that each of the settlements share along with the recreational activities that are associated with this – fishing, surfing, swimming and boating. On the flipside, the Cape Coast is at risk from coastal erosion, inundation and flooding. Erosion is most evident at Cape View and at Clifton where the coastline is actively eroding at a noticeable rate.

This plan is based on the following key principles:

  • Life safety is paramount, and all actions aim to achieve this outcome

  • The Community is prepared to self-evacuate as early as possible.

  • Community support will be coordinated through the Community
